Our laws must keep pace with advanced and professional cybercrimes

Gerakan supports proposal to amend laws to tackle online gambling
Cheah Soon Hai: Our laws must keep pace with advanced and professional cybercrimes

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy Chairman
Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai

27 November 2015

Gerakan Deputy Chairman, Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai has voiced his support on the proposal by the Home Ministry to amend laws to tackle online gambling. Cheah noted that online gambling has become an increasingly popular form of gambling among Malaysians. He was concerned that the explosion of online gambling may exacerbate social problems and encourage pathological gambling.

Cheah pointed out that earlier in July the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has blocked access to 310 online gambling websites in the first six months this year out of 940 applications made by the police and various authorities, while 325 online gambling websites were blocked last year out of total 538 applications.

He said the sprouting of online gambling websites and the use of SMS by gambling operators to reach the public via text messages (SMS) is changing the way illegal gambling is operating traditionally in gaming houses or cyber cafes. He believed it is high time that the existing laws are reviewed to better address the new modus operandi.

“The instant gratification of virtual games, easy accessibility and high level of privacy have made illegal gambling popular and a big business. Our laws must keep pace with “very intelligent and professional” online gaming syndicates, it is important that we react proactively by having up-to-date law to give more bite to the authorities to fight online gambling,” said Cheah

Cheah also raised a number of issues surrounding online gambling that warrant attention and consideration from authorities such as the growth in the use of mobiles and wireless devices for gambling or betting and the possibility of money laundering across borders on the internet. As such, he suggested that the government should conduct a thorough study on online gambling and associated cybercrimes before proposing amendments to the existing laws. He opined that it is necessary for the authorities to take into account the broad diffusion and complex operations of cybercriminal activities including various forms of online gambling.

Gerakan calls for voters to choose BN if they love Wan Azizah

Cheah Soon Hai: Time for her to rest and stop picking up mess of her husband

Press statement by
Gerakan National Deputy President
Dato Dr Cheah Soon Hai

5 May 2015

With the Permatang Pauh by-election’s polling day edging nearer towards May 7th pitting Barisan Nasional’s Suhaimi Sabudin against PKR’s Datin Wan Azizah Ismail reaching the penultimate stage where both sides are determine to emerge victorious, Gerakan’s Deputy President, Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai called for voters to choose Barisan Nasional’s candidate Suhaimi over Wan Azizah if they care for the wife of Anwar Ibrahim.
He said that it is enough for Wan Azizah of needing to pick up the pieces and mess made by her husband all this while without having a respite. Wan Azizah was forced to pick up the mantle of PKR’s leader since 1999 and become the alternative of her husband every time he is unable to contest an election such as the 2014 Kajang by-election and now once more.
“Personally Wan Azizah is a loving and caring mother, with age catching up I think that she deserves to have a good time with her family instead of bearing the brunt of a reluctant politician. I believe that Malaysian voters are compassionate and understanding so they can see with their own eyes how much Wan Azizah has aged over the years having need to serve her husband, party and country. The stress could break any individual.”
With Mother’s Day right around the corner, Dato Dr Cheah continued that the voters can play a part by giving her a perfect present by voting for Barisan to give her a respite from all those unwanted attention and pressure from selfish individuals within her party.
“Mother’s Day is about us showing our affection towards our mother, the individual that brought us into this world, despite my mother is 75 years old, she is always more than willing to cook for me for the sake of mother’s love and it is our responsibility to let every mother in this world to have their moment to enjoy time with their loved ones. It is un filial for us to abuse the love shown by our mother.”

Greater religious tolerance over the recent church protest

Gerakan called for greater religious tolerance over the recent church protest
Cheah Soon Hai: All religions must be equally respected to maintain social harmony

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dato’ Dr. Cheah Soon Hai

20 April 2015

Gerakan Deputy President Dato’ Dr. Cheah Soon Hai expressed his concern over a recent church protest at Taman Medan, where a group of Muslims demanded for the removal of a cross on the building façade, out of the worry that the sight of the cross in a Muslim-majority area could influence the young and be an affront to their religious faith. Cheah believed that the protest was overzealous and called for greater religious tolerance and moderation among people of different faith.

“Malaysia is a multi-religious country with Islam as the official state religion. I believe no religion is challenging the position of Islam in the country. We all respect Islam as the official religion but it is also important that we accept the freedom of other religion to practice their own faith freely, openly and with dignity as guaranteed in the Federal Constitution. Religious tolerance is paramount to the peaceful co-existence and harmonious living of a diverse Malaysian society,” said Cheah

Cheah maintained that putting a cross on the church façade was well within the ambit of the law with no element of sedition or proselytization existed. In Malaysia where Muslims and non-Muslims brothers lived shoulder-to-shoulder, it was even more important to understand and respect the existence of other religion to maintain the harmony of the country
