Gerakan wants action to be taken against ISMA
Cheah Soon Hai: ISMA is spreading hate speech
Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai
17 May 2014
Gerakan Deputy President, Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon
Hai has questioned why action has not been taken against Ikatan Muslimin
Malaysia (ISMA) for labeling the Chinese as trespassers in Malaysia with more
racial statement coming out from the organization. He said that such statements
uttered by ISMA were considered as hate speech and detrimental to the nation.
“I would like to know why no action has been
taken despite countless police reports been made against ISMA for labeling the
Chinese as trespassers. In the meantime, as of today ISMA came out with another
statement saying that a political party is capable of engineering a repeat of
the May 13 incident.”
Dato’ Dr Cheah described that all these
statements by ISMA can be considered as a form of hate speech to plant seeds of
distrust among the various community in Malaysia.
“I would like to stress that the Chinese in
Malaysia are already in their 4th or 5th generation
who has ingrain in the Malaysian way of life. Today we can see that a Chinese
enjoying their nasi lemak or roti canai despite the fact that these are not
traditional Chinese food. Such implication means that the Chinese are already
assimilated to the Malaysian lifestyle. Therefore to call a Chinese to return
to China is totally inappropriate in nature as we have no other place to go.”
He continued by saying that political leaders
should not speak through racial tones in abid to gain popularity at the expense
of the nation.
“All these words of ‘Balik Cina or Balik India’,
you will never hear it in the general public as they understand that Malaysia
is their country. The irony is that all these racist statements were usually
uttered by the very people that have been elected by all Malaysians regardless
of race and religion in a bid to further their own selfish goals.”
Dato’ Dr Cheah also pointed out that the History
subject taught in school has been skewed as it only glorifies a single race
instead the contribution of every community to put Malaysia where it is today,
therefore it has to be modified in line with the 1Malaysia concept by the Prime
Minister.
“Our History subject should be telling the truth
that various races has indeed contributed to the formation & development of
Malaysia today”
