Calling support for non-favourism of football players by Khairy

Calling support for non-favourism of football players by Khairy
Cheah Soon Hai: An exemplar for all

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai

28 January 2014

Gerakan Deputy President Dato’ Dr. Cheah Soon Hai supported Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin’s claim that non-favourism action should be taken against the football players. Khairy had urged Malaysian Football Association earlier that they should not favour the football players under any circumstances and should take immediate disciplinary action against players who were found to violate the ethics of conducts.

“Khairy’s request demonstrates a good start that all government departments should follow, especially regarding the Auditor General (AG) report last year, to take legal actions and to claim liability of any parties that were involved in misconducts.”

Cheah pointed out that, taking fair and appropriate disciplinary actions are the only mean to achieve the transformation programs that were implemented by PM Najib, namely transparency, accountability and integrity.

He also added that all government departments should be refrained from their own internal investigations as these often ended in fruitless results without sufficient transparency, eventually leading to popular grumbles. Meanwhile, further actions should be taken to prevent similar things from happening again.

Cheah Soon Hai: It is time for political leaders to show true leadership and induce a healthier political culture

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai

28 January 2014

Following calls were made from both sides of the political divide for a national consensus on nation-building amid rising racial and religious tensions, Gerakan Deputy President, Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai supported the idea of having a BN-PR dialogue on national issues as he strongly believed that unprecedented bipartisan efforts are needed to stop further political polarization and induce a healthier political culture in Malaysia.

“It saddens me to say that over the last few years, Malaysia has become increasingly polarized especially after the 12th General Election (GE) in 2008. The post GE-12 era has seen a surge of excessive politicking and unnecessary polemics over a string of issues, both sides of the political divide are in a bid to outdo one another at the expense of social harmony and political integrity which leads to greater social divergence much to our disappointment.”

Cheah cautioned that the nation cannot afford to lose its traction on progressive renewal and reform after the two divisive GEs. He noted that there are many pressing issues that require pragmatic approaches, resourceful solutions and bipartisan collaboration which clearly spells the need for the proposed BN-PR dialogue in order to reach national consensus. He cited the example of the ongoing political turmoil in Thailand that negatively characterized by mass rallies and bitter polarisation of Thai society which serves as a solemn reminder to all of us that the stability of a country must be the priority above all interests.

“It is now time for political leaders from both sides of the political divide to show true leadership in these trying times and lead the nation out of the current social dilemma. We at Gerakan support the proposed bipartisan dialogue to reach national consensus which is in line with our consistent advocacy of moderation and inclusiveness. We strongly believe that moderate voices in a two-front political system should not be drowned neither by intimidation nor hatred. It is important that we reject gutter politics and the proposed bipartisan dialogue on national consensus will be the groundbreaking moment that opens a new chapter of healthier political culture in Malaysia,” said Cheah.

Gerakan agrees with call to cut red tape in government departments

Gerakan agrees with call to cut red tape in government departments
Cheah Soon Hai: Monitor the operation of local governments

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dato’ Dr. Cheah Soon Hai

23 January 2014

With regards to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s statements in his blog that point out the lack of transparency is the main cause that leads to corruption and he felt that government departments should cut red tape as a measure to fight corruption, Gerakan Deputy President Dato’ Dr Cheah Soon Hai threw his support behind the former Prime Minister and hoped that all government institutions can fully cooperate on that especially state governments and local governments and be more serious on cracking down corruption.

Cheah pointed out that all government departments should cut red tapes, if they fail to handle the applications and problems from the public in time, then they should provide a reasonable excuse so that the people are informed of the circumstances.

“It is important that civil servants are accountable and handle the application procedures impartially. The government should not give too much discretion power to the civil servants as this will open to power abuse and corruption. The Public should be educated on their entitled rights and the standard operating procedures of each department. It is undeniable that some of the government departments or institutions have shown efficiency in works under the Key Performance Index (KPI), the Immigration Department for instance has set a target of issuing a certain number of passports within a limited time frame. Therefore, the government should strengthen the KPI Index to ensure that all departments can meet the standards.”
