Lim and DAP should quit PR if fail to stop PAS
from tabling Hudud bill
Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President

Gerakan Deputy
President, Dato Dr. Cheah Soon Hai criticised DAP leader Lim Kit Siang on his
attempt to divert public attention from the upcoming special Kelantan state
assembly meeting on 29 December to facilitate for Hudud implementation in the
state. He challenged Lim and DAP to quit Pakatan Rakyat (PR) if fail to stop
PAS to table the Hudud bill as the proposer and its allies have the biggest
responsibility to prevent the crisis.
Cheah was disappointed
that Lim and DAP continuously resorting to irresponsible politicking and
rhetoric targeting Barisan Nasional’s component parties even at this critical
juncture where the sanctity of the Federal Constitution faces unprecedented
challenge. In contrast, Cheah reiterated that Gerakan has been firm and
consistent with its stand that Hudud is unconstitutional, against the basic
structure of Malaysia and inapplicable under a multiracial Malaysian society,
cross-partisan consensus is needed to prevent the imminent constitutional
crisis.
“It is hugely
unfortunate that Lim has forgotten that DAP as the political ally of PAS within
Pakatan Rakyat (PR) has the immediate responsibility to stop PAS from pursuing
their faulty agenda. I challenge Lim and DAP to quit PR if PAS does not
withdraw Hudud bill in a week time. I strongly believe that if Lim and DAP fail
or have no courage to stop PAS from tabling the bill, they have no right to
challenge others,” said Cheah.
Cheah lamented that Lim
and DAP have failed to gauge the seriousness of the situation and even more
saddening was the fact that they have shown intent to leverage on the situation
for their political gains.
“For far too long, Lim
and DAP have offered no more than just mild and superficial challenge against
PAS’s insistence on Hudud. How can DAP allows PAS to continue its pursuit on
Hudud for so long leading up to the crisis? Let us not forget that Hudud was
proposed by PAS, Lim Kit Siang and DAP undoubtedly have the immediate
responsibility to save the situation,” said Cheah.
