University intake must be transparent
Cheah Soon Hai: Standardise the intake system
Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President

3 December 2013
With regards to the statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that meritocracy must be continue as the determining factor for intake into public universities, Gerakan Deputy President, Dr Cheah Soon Hai said that he agrees with the need for continued meritocracy but feels that the admission system must be transparent.
"If the admission system to universities and results has no transparency, students who fail to gain admission will not be able to know the reasons of their rejection and they will not be able to make any amends to ensure they gain entry if they reapply. In England for example, students can check why they have not been accepted and proceed to rectify their weaknesses. Therefore, it is important for our local universities to reveal the outcome of admissions because we should not have anything to hide. " Dr Cheah said.
He also pointed out with the admission to public universities based on STPM and matriculation results, the Education Ministry should open the matriculation programme to all Malaysians or standardise STPM and matriculation so it will be fair and STPM students will not be discriminated against as STPM is subject to a more challenging assessment system.
Finally, Dr Cheah said that the Education Ministry must be fair to all Malaysians.
