Gerakan agrees that new historical narrative needed to unite nation

Cheah Soon Hai: Review of History syllabus must be open to all historians

Press statement by

Gerakan Deputy President

Dr Cheah Soon Hai

18 December 2013

The view made by Former Deputy Prime Minister Tun Musa Hitam calling for a new historical narrative to unite the various races in the country after noticing that racial fragmentation within the country, has worsened because the different ethnic groups disputed each other's interpretations of the nation's history has drawn a response from Gerakan Deputy President, Dr Cheah Soon Hai. He agreed that the current History syllabus taught in school is different from the past syllabus as it centered on just the major ethnic and religious group in Malaysia forgetting or omitting the efforts of other ethnic and religious groups in the struggle of liberating and growing Malaysia.

"The current syllabus is akin to downplaying the contributions of other races towards the building of this nation causing inevitable racial polarisation and unnecessary hurt."

Dr Cheah said that since History is now a compulsory subject, the government must seriously look into the problems faced in order for a new syllabus which is fair and unbiased. He pointed out that past contributions made by other races must never be neglected in order for the country to achieve real unity and adhere the 1Malaysia concept.

"I think that Tun Musa Hitam's statements spot on as it accurately portrays the public concern with the current History syllabus." added Dr Cheah who also praised Tun Musa for his honesty. The historical must be high quality, inclusive, honest, trustworthy, accurate and just.

Dr Cheah finally said that during the review of the History syllabus, it must not only be done by the Education Ministry but to open it to historians from the various races to have a complete view. He pointed out the country was build among the diversity leaders and the public must recognise and respect the difficulties trying to impose a uniform identity under the pretest of unity

"Since History is an important subject that offers reference to the national identity, it must be holistic and not confined to the views of only one community. By opening the discussion to other academicians from different backgrounds, will we gain a more complete understanding on how others think and ensure that the History our children learn in school is not skewered."

Gerakan backs Suhakam's call for the setting up of a parliamentary special committee on human rights

Cheah Soon Hai: Government must institutionalise the respect for human rights

Press statement by

Gerakan Deputy President

Dr Cheah Soon Hai

12 December 2013

Gerakan Deputy President Dr Cheah Soon Hai has echoed a recent call by the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) to set up a special committee in Parliament to discuss its annual report and step up efforts to improve the country's human rights. Cheah threw his support behind Suhakam and commended the body for tirelessly defending and fostering the respect for human rights.

"It is important that Suhakam's annual report on human rights be debated in the Parliament and not ignored simply because of its paramount importance that the report is debated and the state is held accountable for any infringement of the fundamental liberties enshrined in Part II of our Federal Constitution. As Malaysia progresses and matures democratically, our protection and respect for the fundamental liberties of all Malaysians must be scrutinised and improved if the need be," said Cheah.

In addition, Cheah also called on the government ratify the remaining six core international human rights treaties as soon as possible to raise the country's profile and to exhibit our seriousness of being a country that is respected and adored for its commitment to human rights and liberty. He opined that it is now time for the government to institutionalise the respect for human rights and start translating the spirit and letter of the treaties into policy making. Cheah also suggested that a human rights module be introduced in schools to raise awareness among the youth on the importance of human rights.

Cheah stressed that Gerakan is ready to collaborate with all parties to promote human rights in the country as it is a universal cause that should not be hindered by partisan politicking. He added that in conjunction with World Human Rights Day, Gerakan has recently launched a signing campaign to call for the abolition of death penalty, which serves as a testament to Gerakan's commitment to continue championing human rights.

University intake must be transparent
Cheah Soon Hai: Standardise the intake system

Press statement by
Gerakan Deputy President
Dr Cheah Soon Hai

3 December 2013

With regards to the statement made by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak that meritocracy must be continue as the determining factor for intake into public universities, Gerakan Deputy President, Dr Cheah Soon Hai said that he agrees with the need for continued meritocracy but feels that the admission system must be transparent.

"If the admission system to universities and results has no transparency, students who fail to gain admission will not be able  to know the reasons of their rejection and they will not be able to make any amends to ensure they gain entry if they reapply. In England for example, students can check why they have not been accepted and proceed to rectify their weaknesses. Therefore, it is important for our local universities to reveal the outcome of admissions because we should not have anything to hide. " Dr Cheah said.

He also pointed out with the admission to public universities based on STPM and matriculation results, the Education Ministry should open the matriculation programme to all Malaysians or standardise STPM and matriculation so it will be fair and STPM students will not be discriminated against as STPM is subject to a more challenging assessment system.

Finally, Dr Cheah said that the Education Ministry must be fair to all Malaysians.
