Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman, Dr Cheah Soon Hai was touched by the thousands of volunteers many of them young people taking part in the My Beautiful Malaysia programme nationwide yesterday.
"I on behalf of Gerakan would like to express our gratitude to the thousands of volunteers especially youth willing to take part in yesterday's programme aiming to clean up our environment."
Cheah said that the overwhelming response from yesterday's event dispels the notion that the younger generations are mainly individualistic and take things for granted.
"Volunteerism is still very much alive in this country but I hope that more youths will participate in upcoming programmes that require the spirit of volunteerism. Every citizen needs to realise that Malaysia does not belong to only a few, but to every Malaysian. Therefore it is imperative for us to make sure that hard work done by our forefathers does not go to waste." Cheah called the public.
Dr Cheah, also Kedah Derga state assemblyman added that through this programme, we can witness the initiative done by PM Najib to make volunteerism meaningful again such as the launching of the 1M4U fund.
"The RM 100 million 1M4U fund launched by PM Najib showed that he is serious in his believing of youth power. He is always known as a leader who listens to the calls and grouses of all Malaysians especially the youth. Other than that, he also announced that a 1M4U radio station will be launched soon aimed at communicating with the younger generation. I believe that there will be even more initiatives launched by the PM in the future if we stay as 1Malaysia."
Finally, he voiced out hope that volunteer programmes will be done constantly to provide an avenue for youths to spend their weekend meaningfully as it is giving back to the society while at the same time enhancing the reputation of Malaysians as friendly and helpful in the eyes of foreigners.
