Kedah Gerakan Youth hands over memorandum on state govt's debts

ALOR SETAR: Kedah Gerakan Youth yesterday handed over a memorandum to Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan

Abdul Razak on the state government's debts which have reached almost RM3 billion.

Its chief Tan Keng Liang said in the memorandum, the state government was urged to take appropriate measures to

reduce the debt burden accumulated since it came into power in Kedah in 2008.

"According to the Auditor-General's Report 2011, as at Dec 31 2011, the debts had reached RM2.6 billion while the

state government's cash balance stood at only RM193.22 million.

"From our investigation, we found that the RM2.6 billion did not include the RM330 million debt from the construction

of Kuin (Kolej Universiti Insaniah). Hence, the estimated debts now amount to RM2.933 billion.

He said this after handing over the memorandum to the menteri besar's special officer (Youth), Mohd Rosli Azmi at

Wisma Darul Aman, here.

Tan noted that the debt increase was almost 50 per cent after PAS and its allies in the opposition pact took over the

state's administration.

"We are therefore worried with the state's financial situation as the debt amount is too high while the cash balance is

less than that," he said.

Tan said the debts could be reduced if the state government had been practising prudent spending and made

thorough studies before investing in any project to avoid heavy losses.

"The Kedah government said it had been spending prudently but it had bought a Mercedes S350 car at almost

RM800,000, an example of it wasting public funds.

"We hope the menteri besar will look into this matter to safeguard the state's future," he added.

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman

Dr Cheah Soon Hai

20 February 2013

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman, Dr Cheah Soon Hai expressed his dismay when news of a goldsmith robbery took off in front of a police station in Selayang Baru came to his knowledge.

"This is one of the many robbery cases happening in Malaysia , but criminals are getting bolder by the day. By conducting the robbery in front of a police station, it shows that they have absolutely no fear of the peacekeepers."

Dr Cheah pointed out that if houses or shops in front of a police station's vicinity are also targeted by criminals, what more of those located further away. "This showed that mere police presence is inadequate to deter criminals from acting."

"If the police are unable to protect our streets, it is no wonder Malaysians fear for their own safety all the time. Frustrations will soon boil over, forcing many to take the law into their own hands upon apprehending a criminal. This is one of the reasons why we hear so many criminals being bashed by the public in case of being caught."

Cheah who is also Kedah Derga state-assemblyman said that the action of a worker giving chase to the robbers is a brave move but risky considering the fact that both robbers were armed with parangs. "Luckily there is no one hurt in this unfortunate incident."

He added that certain measures such as CCTV's have to be installed in shops that are considered high risk such as banks, goldsmiths, pawn brokers and also money changers to provide evidence in case of a robbery.

Finally, he suggested mandatory jail term and stiffer minimum penalty for repeating offenders in cases of robbery, snatch and manhole cover theft must be given out to serve as a deterent.

Gerakan supports additional approval of KR1M

Dr Cheah Soon Hai hopes that quality and price will remain competitive

Press statement by

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman

Dr Cheah Soon Hai

15 February 2013

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman, Dr Cheah Soon Hai voiced his support upon hearing the government's announcement of approving an additional 35 Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia nationwide to the 57 for East Malaysia already approved under the Budget 2013.

"Due to the ever rising prices of food and other essential items, it is encouraging to see the government working so hard to alleviate the burden faced by the people. Therefore the additional amount of KR1M nationwide will give more Malaysians a chance to get cheaper goods."

Dr Cheah, also Kedah Derga state-assemblyman suggests that other than focusing on the urban poor, the government should also establish more of these shops in rural places since the average income will be lower compare to the city.

"I think that rural folks also deserve to enjoy the benefits offered by the government since they also play a part in contributing immensely to the growth of our nation's economy. Without them, we are not able to reduce the need of importing food from overseas hence the out-flowing of our currency."

He stressed that the government should also ensure that the location of the KR1M is easily accessible since most of the people visiting it are poor and might need to travel on foot.

"Other than location, quality is another vital aspect as it is the government's duty to ensure that the items sold in the KR1M fulfil the quality requirements rather than just being cheap. Only then, the customers will be able to feel the money spent is worthwhile on a cheap but quality ensured item."

Finally, Cheah hopes that the people will support the government's effort through countless programmes to propel Malaysia into a high-income nation by 2020.

Press statement by

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman

Dr Cheah Soon Hai

4 February 2013

Gerakan Central Bureau on Environment, Safety and Quality of Life Chairman, Dr Cheah Soon Hai was touched by the thousands of volunteers many of them young people taking part in the My Beautiful Malaysia programme nationwide yesterday.

"I on behalf of Gerakan would like to express our gratitude to the thousands of volunteers especially youth willing to take part in yesterday's programme aiming to clean up our environment."

Cheah said that the overwhelming response from yesterday's event dispels the notion that the younger generations are mainly individualistic and take things for granted.

"Volunteerism is still very much alive in this country but I hope that more youths will participate in upcoming programmes that require the spirit of volunteerism. Every citizen needs to realise that Malaysia does not belong to only a few, but to every Malaysian. Therefore it is imperative for us to make sure that hard work done by our forefathers does not go to waste." Cheah called the public.

Dr Cheah, also Kedah Derga state assemblyman added that through this programme, we can witness the initiative done by PM Najib to make volunteerism meaningful again such as the launching of the 1M4U fund.

"The RM 100 million 1M4U fund launched by PM Najib showed that he is serious in his believing of youth power. He is always known as a leader who listens to the calls and grouses of all Malaysians especially the youth. Other than that, he also announced that a 1M4U radio station will be launched soon aimed at communicating with the younger generation. I believe that there will be even more initiatives launched by the PM in the future if we stay as 1Malaysia."

Finally, he voiced out hope that volunteer programmes will be done constantly to provide an avenue for youths to spend their weekend meaningfully as it is giving back to the society while at the same time enhancing the reputation of Malaysians as friendly and helpful in the eyes of foreigners.
