Public Service Dept offers 600 new scholarships

PETALING JAYA: Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships have been awarded to 600 students who obtained a cumulative grade point average of 4.0, but failed to get into programmes of their choice in public universities.

The students had applied for medicine, dentistry and pharmacy through the Higher Education Ministry's centralised university unit (UPU) but received other offers instead.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said PSD would sponsor these students in private universities for the programmes they had chosen. "The PSD will contact these students before Aug 15 to see if they would accept the offer," he said in a statement yesterday.

Of the 600, he said 310 are Bumiputra candidates, 260 Chinese, 21 Indians and nine from other races.

Mohamed Khaled stressed that this offer was not applicable to students who already received offers for the same programmes in public universities or had obtained their first choice.
