Kedah govt taken to task over abattoir
Press Statement by Dr Cheah Soon Hai, Derga Assemblyman
July 1, 2009
Derga assemblyman Dr Cheah Soon Hai slammed the Pas-led state government in Kedah over its decision to relocate an abattoir in Seberang Jalan Putra, Alor Star, without providing an alternative site.
Dr Cheah, who is also Kedah Gerakan chairman, said the state government was insensitive to the needs and welfare of the pig farmers and the pig-farming industry.
“Their action lends weight to our fear that Pas is bent on using Islamic laws to administer Kedah. DAP and PKR, who are Pas partners, are ineffective and useless,” said Dr Cheah.
Dr Cheah said the previous Barisan Nasional state government had proposed a site in Bukit Selambau to be used as a centralised abattoir.
“Even then, the BN government did not force the pig farmers in Seberang Jalan Putra to move out. However, the present government has abandoned the plan,” said Dr Cheah.
He said Gerakan and MCA were greatly concerned with the pig farmers’ plight and the interest of the pig farming industry in Kedah.
He urged Kedah DAP and PKR to seek help from Lim kit Siang and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to solve this problem
