- I am concerned by the recent statements on the level of crime made by the Federal CID Chief as well as the Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak who was quoting the Inspector General of Police Tan Sri Datuk Musa bin Hassan.
- One of the major concerns of the Rakyat in the last General Election was the level of crime and the failure of the police to effectively deal with this problem.
- We have had spike in violence and crime resulting in the crime rate spiking from 150,000 reported crimes between 2000 to 2004 it has spiked to 209,000 last year.
- According to a report entitled 'Crime Levels and Trends in the Next Decade' by ACP Amar Singh Sidhu published in 2006, 89% of his respondent were either 'worried' or 'extremely worried' on the occurrence of crime in their neighourhood.
- Such concerns must be taken seriously by the police. Comparing our crime to Hong Kong and Japan is most inappropriate because as first world countries the level of reporting is much higher as well as the number of offences.
- It is advised that comparisons must be made against countries with similar political, economic and social challenges.
- Quality of life issues is an important matter for most Malaysians and the Government must take serious action in combating this problem. While I welcome the increased number of police officers, but they must be fully trained and well equipped the challenges of the present and future.
- It is also advised that the crime rate must be broken down into levels of violent crime, corporate crime, computer crime and petty crime. If we do so, we will be able to have a better picture of the levels of crime and the police will then be better able to segregate their limited resources efficiently by tackling the sectors that have a higher rate of offending.
- The Government must also work towards tackling the causes of crime such as economic hardship, lack of educational opportunities and social breakdown besides fighting crime itself.
Thank You.
