Kedah Government demonstrated poor financial management skill
on the quit rent issue of UUM, said Gerakan
Press statement by Dr Cheah Soon Hai,
Gerakan Kedah State Chairman and Derga State Assemblyman
29 April 2011
Referring to the quit rent issue of the University Utara Malaysia, Sintok("UUM"), Kedah Gerakan State Chairman Dr Cheah Soon Hai today criticized the Pakatan Rakyat Government of Kedah to be lack of financial management skills and monetary sense. The way the Kedah government responded to the issue showed how immature and short-sighted the government is.
Dr Cheah said, it is very foolish of the Kedah Government to increase the quit rent of UUM from the initial RM100,000 to RM1.7million, reason being that this amount of money could actually be used for better purpose such as supporting the academic research studies and publication cost for the university.
He said, being one of the few higher institutions in Kedah, UUM has been producing talents from different races, thus providing many professionals and human resource for various sectors, and it is a University which Kedahan are proud of. UUM has a total of 30 thousand students, lecturers and administrative staff, it is undeniable that the institute has helped to promote and maintain the local economy, however, it is very much regrettable that the Kedah government is disregarding the fact and imposing such high quit rent on the university.
Dr Chea, who is also the assemblymen for Derga said that the Kedah government link company is not being sensible for requesting for high interest loan from the Bank of Islam to built an Islamic University branch in Kedah. It fully shows how unreasonable is the Kedah Government for increasing the quit rent of UUM.
Dr Cheah said, when the Kedah's BN leaders went to UUM for a visit to further understand the issue, they found that the university was actually facing another monetary issue where the university management has to pay RM80,000 to RM90,000 each month to transfer water to the campus just because the Kedah government is unable to supply water to the university. This has inevitably increased the expenses of the university. However, when the Pakatan Rakyat government of Kedah may chose to ignore such serious issue of water shortage, they asked for a higher quit rent from the university and such a move is absolutely unreasonable and disappointing to the people.
Dr Cheah also condemned the attitude of the Kedah government for being so unconcerned of the development of higher education as an act of revenge against the Public Universities established by the Federal Government.
